The CEO of Lilly, John Lechleiter, has advised that the company will shed 5,500 jobs worldwide by 2011 in a bid to save $1bn. This manufacturer, know to the general public amongst other things for its erectile dysfunction product Cialis, which is a major challenger of the well established Pfizer Viagra pill, is restructuring so that it can drive forward its pipeline of development which has over 60 streams of new product R & D. This should help it offset patent protection loss on some of its biggest selling products. They plan to set up a Centre of Excellence to push their R & D forward in a positive, structured way, which suggests that this sector of their company will be protected from the job losses.
